I Slept Under the Stars in a Glass Dome in Utah (and Saw My First Meteor Shower)
Some trips stay with you. Because something happened that you weren't expecting. Something quiet and big at the same time.
That's what Clear Sky Resorts did for me.
What Is Clear Sky Resorts?
Clear Sky Resorts is a glamping property near Bryce Canyon in southern Utah. And when I say near Bryce Canyon, I mean close enough to make day hikes genuinely easy, but far enough out that the sky at night is completely dark.
That darkness is kind of the whole point.
The resort is made up of geodesic domes tucked into the red rock landscape. From the outside, they look almost sculptural, like little planets that landed on the hillside. From the inside? That's where it gets good.
The Dome Experience
Let's start with the most important thing: the ceiling is made of glass panels.
Not "sort of see-through" glass. Full panoramic, look-straight-up-at-the-sky glass. You lie in bed and the ceiling opens up to whatever is happening outside. At night, that means stars. A lot of them.
I've looked at the sky before, obviously. But there's something different about doing it horizontal, warm, tucked into a real bed, with the desert silence around you. It felt like the sky came to me instead of the other way around.
The domes themselves are really comfortable. You have a real bed, a cozy interior, and that gorgeous glass ceiling doing all the work. Think of it like your little home base at the end of a long day outside.
My First Meteor Shower
On August 12th, the Perseid meteor shower happened and I got to watch it from the desert.
We pulled our chairs outside, sat down, and just stared up. No screens, no noise. Just the open Utah sky and whatever it decided to do that night.
The shooting stars came one at a time at first, then more frequently. Sometimes two would cross the sky almost at once. I lost count somewhere around the 15th or 16th one. It was one of those moments that's hard to explain to someone who wasn't there. You feel small in the best possible way. Like the world is so much bigger and more beautiful than your to-do list.
I genuinely teared up a little. No shame.
A Hike With a View You Won't Forget
There's a trail nearby that takes you up above the resort. It's not the longest hike, but the climb is real. Steep-ish in spots, rocky underfoot. Wear actual shoes for this one.
But when you get to the top? You can see all the domes spread out across the hillside below you. It's this little moment where you fully understand the scale of the place. All those rounded shapes dotting the landscape, the red and tan hills behind them, open sky above. It looks like something out of a dream.
I stood up there for a while. Not rushing to get back down. Just taking it in.
That view also put into perspective how beautifully the resort fits into the landscape. Nothing jarring, nothing overdone. Just domes in the desert.
The Location Makes It Even Better
If you're planning a Utah trip around Bryce Canyon or the Grand Staircase area, Clear Sky makes for a genuinely great home base.
Bryce Canyon is close. Close enough to do a morning hike and be back for lunch. The surrounding area has trails, scenic roads, and those wide open stretches of red rock that make Utah feel like another planet entirely.
It also means you're not driving a long way to get to things. That buffer matters when you want to actually enjoy a trip instead of spending half of it in a car.
Is It Worth It?
Yes. Genuinely.
Clear Sky fits its landscape. The comfort is real, the experience is real, and the night sky is something you can't manufacture anywhere else.
If Utah is already on your list, this is a good reason to finally book it. And if it wasn't on your list before, well. Now it is.
